With each New Year, millions of individuals commit to change and improvement. The top two New Year’s resolutions are:

  1. To be happier.

And,

  1. To lose weight/exercise or be healthier (i.e., stop smoking, etc.)

Being happy should be at the top of the list. Not only is this the real purpose of living, but there are many studies showing the overall health benefits of happy, positive people compared to negative, unhappy ones. A popular alternative health method that hundreds of thousands commence is a cleansing or detoxification program. Dozens of such programs are advertised from HSN, Facebook to your local alternative medicine practitioner. Every program advocates the benefits and how healthy and clean your body will become and perhaps how much weight you’ll lose.

Wanting to become healthier and lose weight is an admirable goal.  Problems can develop when companies or individuals use your desire of better health against you to their advantage and possibly to the overall detriment of your health.

If you’re considering a cleanse or detoxification program this month, here are a few things to consider before you begin:

  1. Your body is far more toxic than ever before. According to a new study by York University, “If you are 40 years old now, you’d have to eat even less and exercise more than if you were a 40 year old in 1971, to prevent gaining weight.” Why? The lead researcher, Prof. Kuk, explains that our body weight is impacted by our lifestyle and environment, such as medication use, environmental pollutants, genetics, timing of food intake, stress, gut bacteria and even nighttime light exposure. “Ultimately, maintaining a healthy body weight is now more challenging than ever.”

On the surface, this would seem a fantastic reason to commence a cleansing program. But do you ask yourself if your eliminatory pathways can support the chelation and removal of a huge burden of toxicity? A large portion of the toxicity found in the body is stored in the adipose tissue (fat cells). When weightloss accompanies the cleansing process, a gigantic amount of toxicity from chemical preservatives, medication to fire retardant chemicals is forced into your blood stream demanding your body to deal with it.

One of the most significant pathways for such removal is called the Cytochrome P450 enzyme pathway. This is a phase II liver, lung and kidney enzyme pathway for chemical detoxification. There are medications that now suppress this key pathway, which hinders the removal of the chemical and extends the medications half-life.

The only way that this enzyme is created and functions flawlessly is through phytochemicals in certain cruciferous vegetables. How many servings of broccoli, cauliflower, Brussel sprouts or the like to you eat every day? If you’re honest you’ll realize that if you have one or two small servings a week of these vegetables, you’re lucky!

What that means is that your body’s chemical elimination pathways are compromised. So ask yourself:

“What’s happens if I start a cleansing program and force large amounts of toxic chemicals into my blood stream, demanding flawless function of a detoxification pathway that is already compromised?”

I’ll tell you what it means; it means you’ll get sick.

Have you ever heard anyone say they feel terrible within the first three to four days of a cleanse? The reason is due to the process we just discussed. Here’s a secret: once you start to feel better a few days later may not be due to less chemicals in your body. It’s more likely due to the fact that your body REABSORBED the toxic chemicals, often in a more vulnerable tissue!

Bottom line: your biochemistry may not be capable or ready to take the significant added burden of forced toxic chemical expulsion from tissue that’s triggered through cleansing. It’s imperative for you to have a biochemical/genetic response test to ascertain how, when and if your body is ready and capable to withstand the added demand of chemical detoxification.

  1. Most cleansing ‘systems’ focus on one or two organs. The most common area of focus is the colon; the second most common area is the liver.

Your body has many detoxification pathways. Kidney, blood, lungs, lymphatic, hepatic and even waste elimination on the cellular level are all part of your body’s natural detoxification system. Concentrating on one or two organs systems can actually over-burden the remaining systems responsible for natural detoxification causing unnecessary harm to your health. According to the science of Homotoxicology, depending on what phase of toxification your body is in, there may have been severe damage to cellular respiration and even genetic structure of the cells. Commencing a cleansing program without any specific support for this cellular condition will dramatically impact your health, further worsening your condition.

  1. Some cleansing ‘systems’ increase your blood sugar for weeks, which is a serious medical risk for many. A popular method of cleansing is juicing or juice fasting. This particular style of cleansing requires one to juice and consume large amounts of vegetables, often carrots and other high fructose veggies and fruit. Both of these foods naturally have a large amount of sugar, some up to 30%. Consuming a glass of juiced fruit and veggies that would be a much larger portion than you could possibly consume in a meal, dramatically increases your blood sugar causing more health problems in the long run. I challenge you to juice 12 ozs of fruit and vegetables and test your blood glucose levels twenty – thirty minutes afterward. You’ll be shocked.
  2. One of the main reasons for organ dysfunction and obesity is hormone dysregulation, which MOST cleansing ‘systems’ fail to address. Hormone dominance, especially of estrogen, in both men and women is a leading cause of health problems. Additionally, it is one of the more common forms of toxicity and toxic overload your body must deal with. One organ that is a virtual necessity to have functioning at an optimal level for detoxification of estrogen is your gallbladder. Estrogen is a fat-soluble hormone and as such, requires bile to emulsify and remove it. If you have congested biliary function, which is exceptionally common, or if you do not have your gallbladder due to surgery, your ability to remove these biochemicals (hormones) is limited and requires very specific and special support. Trying to force the removal of these toxins from your body through a cleanse will only further impair the function of these vital organs.
  3. Alternative health practitioners typically only offer ONE cleansing system or method as the ‘best’. Rather, you really need a system that is customized to your biochemical and genetic disposition, medical and pharmaceutical history along with overall health considerations. Just like one shoe size does not fit all, one type of program is not best for everyone. You need guidance of a true functional nutrition expert to identify what your unique body chemistry and genetic makeup require for best results.
  4. (BONUS) A ludicrous thought that is promulgated by some, is that they’re going to ‘cleanup’ their body from eating crappy, toxic, genetically modified food products throughout the year by simply doing a ‘cleanse’. This is exactly like saying that you’re going to use the crappiest, cheapest, water crusted gasoline you can find for your vehicle because you get an oil change every 3-6 months. Thinking that the condition of your engine will be great using that system is like thinking your health will be great by doing a ‘cleanse’ every so often. If that were the case, then there wouldn’t be an explosion of heart disease, cancer, diabetes and Alzheimer’s we see. It just ain’t that simple, honey!

To summarize, it is imperative to know what condition your specific biochemistry is in, what eliminatory pathways need unique support and what is best for your biochemical and genetic makeup to benefit your health the most. Running out and purchasing expensive purification or cleanse systems without knowing or having expert support is akin to thinking Russian Roulette is a relaxing form of entertainment.

One of the best ways to naturally ‘detox’, is to permanently change your diet from a processed foods, sugar laden one to a fresh, whole, real food one. This is far more challenging than doing a ‘cleanse program’ for two or three weeks, which is why most people opt to spend $200-300 on those programs…and not achieve any lasting results.
